A star striker, a talent and a diamond of modern football – commentators and sports reporters do not skimp on compliments when it comes to midfielder Paulo Dybala. Over the years of his career, he has repeatedly demonstrated high performance, scoring goals against opponents, which has earned him the immense love of the sports community. For his unbending character and will to win, the athlete received the nickname La Joya – “The Pearl” – from fans.
The future footballer was born in Laguna Large, Argentina, on November 15, 1993. The celebrity’s parents were middle-class: Adolfo Dybala owned a bookmaker’s office, and Alicia de Dybala took care of the house and children. Paulo is their youngest child, so he was surrounded by the love and care of all family members from childhood.
The boy’s father always said that one of his sons would become a great footballer, but the prophecy did not come true right away. The eldest of the heirs, Gustavo, became a businessman, and the middle one, Mariano, was involved in gymnastics. And only Paulo showed an interest in playing with a ball from an early age.
Dybala’s sports career began with the Newell’s Old Boys team, whose base was located in his hometown. When Paulo got older, he was tried out for the Instituto club. Training took place in Cordoba, located an hour’s drive from Laguna Large. The father spared no time to take his son to classes every day, supported him in his endeavors and rejoiced at his successes. But Paulo Adolfo never got his moment of glory. When the young man turned 15, the man died of pancreatic cancer, which he had been battling for several years. Instituto treated the family tragedy of their pupil with understanding and loaned him to Newell’s Old Boys so that he could be with his father in the last months of his life.
Returning back to Cordoba was not easy, because Dybala no longer wanted to be separated from his family. He was thinking about leaving professional football forever and playing for himself at an amateur level. During this difficult period, the young man was supported by his family, who helped him get back on the field. Paulo Dybala realized that he had to continue his career in order to honor the memory of his father and become a champion.
Dybala’s professional biography began in August 2011, when he took to the field in the Instituto starting lineup. The team’s opponents were the Huracana players. A week later, Paulo scored a goal against Aldosivi. The athlete continued to amaze. In just 7 months, he managed to set two records. At 17, Dybala went down in history as the youngest scorer to score a hat-trick twice in the Argentine Football Association. In addition, the player managed to maintain his scoring rate and score goals in 7 matches in a row. It is not surprising that representatives of other clubs soon paid attention to the talented footballer. In 2012, it became known that he signed a contract with the Sicilian Palermo. According to Paulo, at first he was thinking about moving to a lower-level European team to gain experience and earn the opportunity to play in the top divisions, but the management of Instituto decided everything for him. At that time, the Cordoba club was going through hard times, and selling the player seemed like a salvation. The transfer price was € 2 million, but later the president of the FC disappeared with the money. Dybala believes that his sacrifice was in vain, but at the same time he does not regret moving to Palermo. Although he did not know Italian and did not understand the local customs at first, he was accepted as a native and taught a professional game. His debut in the new team was not cloudless, because soon after the player arrived, it was relegated to Serie B. But the club managed to regain its previous positions, and he played the 2014/2015 season in Serie A.

Paulo quickly became a star and a favorite of fans, who lined up for autographs and tried to imitate his hairstyle. They did not turn away from the athlete, even when it became known about his transfer to Juventus. At the end of his last match for Palermo, fans saw the footballer off, applauding him standing. The purchase of Dybala cost the new team € 32 million, which at that time made him the most expensive Argentine footballer in history. He received the number 21, which was previously worn by Andrea Pirlo and Zinedine Zidane. The player immediately began to justify the funds invested in him and the hopes of the club’s management. In his debut match against Lazio, he scored a spectacular goal. In the following years, Paulo repeatedly helped Juventus win the Italian Cup and Super Cup, as well as the national championship of this country. For his playing style and scoring, fans nicknamed the striker “the second Lionel Messi”. Although the player is flattered by such a comparison, he strives for uniqueness.
In 2017, Dybala received a new number – 10, which was previously worn by Michel Platini and Alessandro Del Piero. He considered it a great responsibility and was grateful to the club for the honor. At the end of the 2016/2017 season, the footballer was a contender for the title of UEFA Forward of the Year, but lost the award to Cristiano Ronaldo. Paulo’s success prompted the club to sign a new contract with him until 2022 with an annual salary of € 7 million. But already in the next season, the player’s statistics began to deteriorate, as he suffered from injuries. Fans were worried that Dybala’s performance would suffer even more after Ronaldo joined Juventus. But the presence of the football legend, on the contrary, stimulated the athlete. In addition, his teammate shared useful advice with him and helped take the game to a new level. In 2020, Paulo was again forced to miss several matches due to the coronavirus pandemic. He himself experienced all the horrors of this dangerous disease, which he suffered from in the spring. In an interview, the player admitted that he had difficulty breathing, felt tired and had muscle pain. Shortly before the expiration of Dybala’s contract with Juventus, information appeared about interest in the player from Chelsea and Atletico. The Argentine forward’s last game for the “Old Lady” was a match with Lazio at his home stadium in May 2022. Saying goodbye to the club, Paulo noted that these were “7 magical years”.
After completing his commitments to Juventus, Dybala became a free agent and signed a 3-year contract with the Roman club Roma until June 30, 2025. The player’s annual salary was € 6 million, including bonuses. The official presentation of the player, who received number 21, on July 26, 2022, was accompanied by a light show on the facade of the Palace of Italian Civilization, where 10 thousand fans gathered. The first game for the “wolves” took place on August 14 in a match with Salernitana, and Paulo opened the statistics of goals for the new club on August 30, scoring against FC Monza. Already in his debut season for the new club, Dybala managed to prove himself. As part of Roma, the player reached the UEFA Europa League final. The team lost to Sevilla.
Paulo’s career at the international level was not as successful as at the national level. In his youth, he never got the opportunity to participate in tournaments, and he declined a call-up to the youth team. In 2015, in a qualifying match for the World Cup in Russia, Dybala made his debut on the field against the Paraguayan team, but was not effective. Three years later, already during the tournament, he participated in games against the Croatians and Mexicans, scoring a goal against the latter. The celebrity’s next competition was the Copa America, which he attended as part of the Argentina national team in 2019. But he failed to win there either.
The Juventus forward was left out of the national team’s roster for the Copa America matches in 2021. The team’s head coach Lionel Scaloni explained the decision by the fact that the footballer received many injuries over the past season, but recovered too late and his athletic form is questionable.
But later, Dybala, along with Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria and other athletes, was included in the national team for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Following the results of the group stage matches, the Argentina team reached the playoffs, but Paulo Dybala spent all this time on the bench. Having reached the final, the Argentina team defeated the French, and Dybala scored one of the post-match penalties. In an interview, Paulo noted that he could have not gone to the tournament at all due to another injury. During the preparation for the World Cup, he was greatly supported by Roma coach Jose Mourinho, who built the game so that his ward would not lose shape and not overexert himself. After the victory, the athlete called him even earlier than his mother and future wife.
Now Paulo continues his sports career. 2024 began again for the footballer with injuries, which became an obstacle to getting into the Argentina national team for the Copa America. But despite this, Dybala managed to score his first hat-trick for Roma in the match against Torino.
